The origins of acupuncture can be traced back at least 2000 years, making it one of the oldest and most long-standing health care systems in the world. Today, it is an effective, natural and increasingly popular form of health care that is being used by people from a wide range of cultural and social backgrounds. Acupuncture takes a holistic approach to understanding normal function and disease processes and focuses as much on the prevention of illness as on the treatment.

What Does Acupuncture Do?

Acupuncture helps to reduce inflammation, increase circulation, and enhance the red and white blood cell saturation in the area that is needled. The insertion of these tiny needles into the body also globally enhances the function of the immune and nervous systems. These effects combine to bring the body into a more a healing and resilient state.

The effects Acupuncture has on the brain is also quite interesting as it is shown to induce the release of endorphins in the pituitary gland and the central nervous system. Endorphins have powerful effects on the body and the mind which include inhibiting pain signals and producing feelings of euphoria. The word endorphin literally translates to “morphine-like substance”. There are many other subtle changes that take place in the brain and body with acupuncture which combat stress, muscle tension, and nervous system function. Many people feel just as relaxed from an acupuncture session as they do from a massage.

Ailments, such as depression, pain, insomnia, infertility, and cancer stem from or are related to systemic imbalances within the body. Acupuncture is a holistic modality and incorporates both the mental and physical dimensions of a person. The art of acupuncture, along with its clinical principles can be of great benefit for many ailments and general well-being and your acupuncture points are specifically chosen to help restore your body’s own vitality.

Incorporation of herbal medicine (herbology) can also have many amazing benefits. Before Western medicine, herbal medicine was the primary source of healing ailments all across the world and for all of history. Herbal medicinal formulas are used very specifically and in order to create certain states in the body, re-harmonize imbalanced systems, and restore optimal functioning. Acupuncture and herbal medicine is routinely used for pain, anxiety, depression, auto-immune diseases, asthma, migraines, menstrual and infertility issues, digestive and intestinal disorders, and addiction to name a few. The World Health Organization has listed many other conditions that acupuncture is able to address.

The World Health Organization and National Institutes of Health have recognized acupuncture as effective in the treatment of:
  • Addictions
  • Arthritis
  • Back Pain
  • Carpal Tunnel
  • Chemotherapy Nausea
  • Depression
  • Digestive disorders
  • Ear Problems
  • fibromyalgia
  • chronic fatigue syndrome
  • anxiety
  • depression
  • obesity
  • cardiovascular issues
  • acute illnesses

How Does Acupuncture Work?

Acupuncture is based on the movement of Qi (chee). According to the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Qi is living energy that circulates to all organs of the body and enables them to function. Nature’s tendency is to self-correct, so we usually recover from most illness or emotional trauma without intervention. Symptoms that persist, however, alert us to an imbalance on a deeper level. The acupuncturist focuses on both the root cause and the symptoms brought on by the imbalance. There are approximately 360 points that acupuncturists use to influence Qi. Over time, acupuncture treatments rebalance the circu- lation of Qi to al the organ systems.

What Happens During Treatment?

During the initial visit, information about your medical and family history, and life situation, as well as information from abdominal palpation, tongue and pulse diagnoses are gathered. After reading your energetic pulses, a treatment is designed to clear blocks, re-balance and build energy. Initially you may need to be seen a couple of times weekly. Later you may be seen weekly. After about 6 weeks, as your energy begins to hold balance for longer periods, the time between treatments decreases.

Why Do People Choose Acupuncture?

People from all walks of life choose acupuncture for different reasons. People who might particularly benefit include those:

  • For whom there are limited medical interventions, as with acute viral infections, nutritional and metabolic disorders, chronic degenerative diseases, allergies and autoimmune diseases, arthritis, hypertension, and certain mental conditions such as depression or anxiety.
  • With chronic pain or other symptoms not responding to Western medical treatment.
  • Who are taking a lot of medications and are reluctant to take more, or are interested in cutting back,
  • Who feel as if something is “wrong” even though tests are inconclusive;
  • Whose symptoms seem to be associated with or worsened by stress (asthma, migraines, etc.).
  • Who would like additional support for their prescribed treatment to help reduce side-effects (i.e., to help with chemotherapy).
